Creative regions in the European Union
Andrea Gallelli
Chapter 4 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 69-88 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter provides an overview of the EU official statistics for the cultural sectors, with a focus on the institutional steps that led to the creation of a common statistical framework and some key figures on the economic dimension of culture. The European Statistical System Network on Culture framework (ESSnet-Culture) is presented as the key reference for official culture statistics in Europe, which distinguishes ten cultural domains and six functions. The data on cultural employment in the EU regions and the analysis of the international trade in cultural goods show a strong relation between culture and economy in creative regions. The chapter outlines the priorities and future perspectives for the cultural and creative sectors in the EU. These include the promotion of culture-based creativity, social inclusion, and well-being, and also the positive externalities of culture in domains such as economic growth, job creation and sustainable development.
