Chapter 5 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 89-109 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter aims to contribute to the English-language literature on China's cultural and creative industries (CCIs) by analyzing the key trends and challenges in the development of China's CCIs and its creative regions. We start with the exploration of the conceptual evolution from cultural markets and cultural economy to cultural industries, highlighting the characteristics of industrialization, digitalization, and capitalization that have emerged in China's CCIs. It further examines the regional and urban–rural disparities that have restricted the balanced growth of these industries. The findings indicate that, while China's CCIs align with global trends, persistent imbalances in cultural, social, and economic capital between provinces and regions continue to impede the development of certain areas. Understanding these issues is crucial for addressing the challenges faced by China's CCIs and for formulating strategies to promote their sustainable development.
