Creative megaregions in the world

Vittorio Galletto, Joan Marull, Joan Trullén Thomàs and Rafael Boix-Domènech

Chapter 7 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 140-153 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the concept of creative megaregions, vast urban areas characterized by a high concentration of creative activities, cultural production, and innovation. It presents a novel methodology for identifying and analyzing these megaregions using a morphological approach based on creative pixel regions. The study identifies 40 creative megaregions worldwide, highlighting their spatial distribution, economic significance, and role in global creative networks. Findings reveal that creativity is highly concentrated, with the five largest megaregions accounting for over half of all creative firms. The research underscores the importance of creative agglomerations in fostering economic growth and regional development. It also opens avenues for future studies comparing creative megaregions with population-based and light-based megaregions, as well as their implications for policy-making and urban planning.
