The economic effect of CCIs: in search of global creative regions
Fernando Álvarez-Teresa
Chapter 9 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 169-189 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The literature on the comparative international impact of creativity on the economy is still presented as an incipient field. This chapter proposes the concept of a global creative region to approximate the economic effect of CCIs for a large sample of 76 countries. To this end, a Global Multi-Regional Input-Output (GMRIO) model is estimated from the OECD's Inter-Country Input-Output (ICIO) Tables of 2023. With this approach, we analyze the share of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in the economy and total multipliers in terms of gross value added for 2019. The results show that CCIs have a relevant economic effect on wealth, but that there is a dual role of CCIs in generating economic growth and contributing to inter-regional inequalities, as their impacts tend to be more pronounced in developed countries.
