Chapter 1 in Corporate Governance and Culture in Financial Institutions, 2025, pp 8-55 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Effective governance and healthy culture underpin all aspects of a firm's organisational life, including all financial regulation policies, being prerequisites for, and integral to, achieving the safety and soundness of individual institutions, the stability of the financial system, market integrity and fair treatment of customers. Governance and culture shape an institution's structure, values, norms and behaviours, influencing its decision-making and resilience as well as outcomes for consumers and markets. This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of this expanding area that will be of use to both academics and practitioners. The discussion is anchored in both policy and academic debates and seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the current regime and identify remaining challenges in its design and implementation.
