Chapter 7 in Corporate Governance and Culture in Financial Institutions, 2025, pp 199-225 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores how ESG (environment, social, governance) strategic management has evolved and its effect on aspects of culture, including trust, values, purpose, people, innovation and leadership. The discussion provides an overview of these developments from early voluntary efforts known as Corporate Social Responsibility, through the need for companies to expand their responsibility following the financial crash of 2008, and up to today's ESG disclosure legislative requirements. The chapter concludes by canvassing a new type of financial services sector culture which is emerging among companies driven by ‘purpose’ and ESG. This chapter builds upon real-world experience of advising corporate clients and integrates recommendations for enhancing ESG management.
