Abstract:
Teaching cases are commonly used to engage executives and leverage their specific industry experiences in the classroom. The strength of cases lies in providing neutral ground to discuss and synthesize a wide range of views addressing a specific business problem. However, using cases to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals can be challenging, as executives may need to question their core assumptions or even the existing business models of their companies. We reflect on why our use of the NotCo case, a Chilean climate tech unicorn, served as an excellent case study to challenge executives’ assumptions about trade-offs between social, ecological, and economic values. Through this reflection, we highlight the features that enable a teaching case to engage executives and potentially change their thinking.
