Innovative teaching approaches to promote sustainable entrepreneurship in secondary education

Ines Krajger and Birgit Oberer

Chapter 16 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 248-262 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the integration of gamification into Sustainable Entrepreneurship Education (SEE) at the upper secondary level. Research highlights the need to equip secondary school students with skills to address sustainability and entrepreneurship challenges, yet gaps remain in developing twenty-first century skills. This study evaluates two pedagogical tools, “inspire! social” and “inspire! build your business,” used in schools for over five years. These games combine theory and practice, enhancing critical thinking, problem solving, and strategic management skills through interdisciplinary and interactive learning. The analysis indicates that most SEE competencies are effectively addressed, and further development is suggested through preparatory lessons, multidisciplinary teaching, and community involvement. Future research should explore the adaptability and scalability of these games, multimedia integration, and diverse contexts, such as social and digital entrepreneurship. The findings underscore the transformative potential of gamified SEE in preparing students to become proactive, resilient leaders in sustainable enterprises.
