Chapter 22 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 337-345 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the collaboration within the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve in Austria as a model for promoting social innovation through experiential learning. Through the innovative format of the “Nock Walk,” students, academic experts, and local stakeholders engage in a collaborative dialogue, fostering the development of relevant research questions and solutions to regional challenges. The iterative nature of these educational exercises not only enhances students’ critical thinking and knowledge but also strengthens community ties and trust in scientific inquiry. Qualitative interviews highlight key success factors related to participants, such as curiosity, mutual respect, and the importance of diverse perspectives. While the findings suggest significant potential for utilizing peripatetic methods in various contexts, further research is needed to explore their long-term impacts and adaptability across different settings. This case study emphasizes the necessity of integrating participatory approaches in education to facilitate sustainable societal transformation.
