Chapter 23 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 347-361 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Research on social innovation in education is fundamental to better understand the systemic nature of social innovation and the transformative potential of universities. This chapter provides a definition of social innovation in education and reflects on the missions of universities from historical and contemporary perspectives. We explore the role of community in higher education and the relevance and forms of knowledge co-creation with society. Additionally, we examine the potential of higher education institutions to drive social change, particularly through developing new practices in education and social engagement. Finally, we present a case study of a German–Canadian intercultural exchange project and contextualize it within the framework of social innovation in education.
