Chapter 24 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 362-375 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the integration of social innovation in teaching and learning at two entrepreneurial universities: Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain, and Lund University (LU), Sweden. Entrepreneurial universities typically focus on research commercialization, often sidelining social innovations. However, the two cases illustrate how social innovations can be supported through teaching and learning practices that develop critical consciousness. Using Freire's framework that considers dialogue, reflection, and action as critical processes necessary for the development of critical consciousness (Freire, 2021), we analyze two master's programs—UPV's MSc in International Cooperation and LU's MSc in Innovation and Global Sustainable Development—explicitly aimed at enabling social innovations. Both programs undertake fieldwork with marginalized and rural communities, enabling students to co-create knowledge and develop critical consciousness. The chapter examines the impact of these programs on students, communities, and teachers, as well as the challenges faced in fostering social innovations within entrepreneurial universities.
