Chapter 25 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 376-391 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, we explore the evolving role of higher education institutions, both in Switzerland and globally, in addressing societal challenges through social innovation. We briefly discuss the concept of social innovation, why it is not yet universally implemented in universities, and theoretical approaches to embedding it in higher education. Using the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) as a case, we examine how governance approaches have successfully integrated social innovation into education, research, and entrepreneurship. The chapter highlights the innovation and entrepreneurship program of the Department of Social Work, which supports non-profit ventures addressing social issues through strategic guidance, financial aid, and expertise. By fostering public engagement and empowering social entrepreneurs, ZHAW demonstrates how higher education institutions can play a critical role in promoting social cohesion and addressing inequality. Finally, we discuss the outcomes, challenges, and future developments required to further embed social innovation into higher education and society.
