Measuring social innovation education's impact: metrics, assessments, and real-world outcomes
Rickard Enstroem
Chapter 4 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 69-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of the frameworks and tools available to evaluate the impact of Social Innovation Education (SIE) at individual, programmatic, and societal levels. SIE aims to equip students with essential cognitive, emotional, and behavioral competencies to address real-world challenges and drive systemic change. The chapter examines widely used evaluation models, including Kirkpatrick's Evaluation Model, Logic Models, and Theory of Change, to assess learning outcomes, institutional adoption, and broader societal contributions. It discusses the challenges in impact measurement, including the complexity of capturing long-term societal effects and the need for multi-level evaluation frameworks. Through examples, the chapter provides practical insights into how institutions can effectively measure and demonstrate the value of SIE to internal and external stakeholders.
