Emilie Holley and Matthias Menter

Chapter 5 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 88-100 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter focuses on the paradigm shift toward the integration of social innovation in higher education institutions. This shift is driven by the forces of social change and the changing expectations of societies. Through a qualitative research approach based on 15 interviews with diverse stakeholders in higher education across Europe we enhance our understanding of the practical considerations for the successful integration of social innovation. Our study emphasizes that to promote the creation of both economic and social value strategies business models and knowledge transfer mechanisms need to be aligned with the social dimension of innovation. Our analysis reveals four dimensions for integrating social innovation into higher education institutions: leadership and culture collaboration and networks faculty and curriculum and infrastructure and resources. The importance of integrating social innovation into higher education lies in creating socially responsible institutions that contribute to both economic and social value creation.
