Community: a catalyst for modern entrepreneurship education

Chapter 7 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 121-137 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, we argue that an impact entrepreneurship perspective adds ambition and scope beyond typical projects of social or sustainable entrepreneurs, strengthening efforts for social innovation. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are well positioned to lay the foundation for impact entrepreneurship, but this requires a ‘next step’ in their entrepreneurship education programs (EEPs). Place- and interest-based communities can act as catalysts, leading to the central research question: How do place- and interest-based communities foster an impact entrepreneurship perspective, and what can entrepreneurship education learn from this? We explored this question with higher education students in four such communities. The results show that understanding the entrepreneurial resource mobilization process helps identify where EEPs can connect to communities, e.g., thematically by offering real-world challenges or by fostering the development of specific competencies. Integrating place- and interest-based communities into EEPs could help HEIs make their contributions to social innovation more tangible and impactful.
