 The future of peace agreements: how AI changes everything (or does it?)Valerie Sticher Chapter 27 in Handbook on the Politics of International Agreements, 2026, pp 414-425 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an increasingly central role in armed conflict. While most research examines AI's military applications, this chapter explores its role in conflict resolution. It argues that AI shapes peace agreements in three primary ways. First, AI can serve as a practical tool in mediation and negotiation by supporting conflict analysis, enhancing inclusivity, and enabling remote monitoring of arrangements. Second, AI can reshape conflict parties’ perceptions of peace agreements and their alternatives through improved information provision, conflict prediction, and early warning capabilities, while also introducing new challenges, particularly with regard to disinformation. Third, AI transforms the nature of warfare itself, altering the context in which negotiations occur. Research on these three themes currently occurs in silos. To prepare for future conflicts, scholars and practitioners must work across disciplinary boundaries and deepen their understanding of how AI is transforming both the nature of warfare and its resolution.
