Introduction: The comparative capitalism approach to European differentiated integration

.

Chapter 1 in Varieties of Capitalism and the Political Economy of Differentiated Integration in Europe, 2024, pp 1-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter introduces the research design of the whole publication project, describes the background, explains the research questions, and presents the guiding hypothesis. It introduces the main theoretical concepts to be used, as well as presents the methodological declaration. The authors justify their case selection in the context of broader debates on centre-periphery relations. They also contextualize their object of interest with regard to the cascading and overlapping series of crises that Europe has been experiencing. This part of the book also serves as an opportunity to position the presented book project in a wider range of literature of the discipline. In the introductory chapters, the authors intersect the two streams of literature – one on differentiated integration, and the other on the varieties of capitalism.
