Swiss exceptionalism: Integration without membership
.
Chapter 5 in Varieties of Capitalism and the Political Economy of Differentiated Integration in Europe, 2024, pp 105-124 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Switzerland, as a non-EU Member State (and one which does not participate in the European Economic Area), finds itself on the periphery of the European differentiated integration map. Most of the literature suggests that it is political factors that motivate the Swiss to remain outside of the EU. In this chapter, the authors try to shed some light on the political determinants and economic complementarities that define Switzerland’s position in the European constellation of differentiated integration.
