Gender, violence and law: an introduction

Abstract: This introductory chapter explores the connections between gender, violence and law, and key themes and debates in feminist scholarship and activism on law and social change. We argue that a broad approach to violence is needed to capture the ways that gender intersects with other hierarchical relations, as well as political and economic orders. Doing so enables greater recognition of the diverse expressions and experiences of violence in the lives of women and LGBTQ+ people. It also ensures that the field as a whole reflects the breadth and depth of critical analyses of the law and its potential to both reproduce and address injustices and harm, as well as encompasses feminist scholarship which is often marginalized. With this as our vision, we reflect on our aims, achievements and limitations in bringing together this Handbook. Finally, the chapter sets out the structure, themes and contributions of the collection.
