The carceral continuum: corrective violence, household imprisonment and the limits of law

Abstract: This chapter examines the interplay between gender, law and violence through dialogical reflections on personal and political experiences. Introducing the frameworks of household imprisonment and corrective violence, we analyze how legal systems perpetuate harm under the guise of protection. The discussion traces colonial roots of gendered and racialized violence, critiques the co-optation of queer movements by nationalist agendas, and emphasizes abolitionist and decolonial approaches. Through a conversational format, we ask six key questions which demonstrate how the personal is always political, and we advocate for dismantling oppressive systems through collective liberation rooted in care and solidarity.
