Corruption in the post-plagiarism era: weaponizing reputation and morality in the name of integrity in higher education

Chapter 10 in Handbook on Corruption in Higher Education, 2025, pp 146-161 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In the post-plagiarism era, the boundaries between integrity and manipulation are increasingly blurred, encompassing new forms of corruption. I explore the complexities of corruption in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on the weaponization of plagiarism and reputation manipulation through moral judgment, particularly in higher education. I investigate how AI has reshaped these issues, enabling more sophisticated and covert forms of misconduct. I examine how reputation and morality are weaponized through orchestrated campaigns or selective disclosure, tactics that have profound implications for society. I discuss the impact of corruption on public trust, concluding with a discussion on the future of ethics and integrity. This emphasizes the critical need for a renewed commitment to upholding these values in the face of evolving challenges. The role that higher education plays in teaching, learning, and thought leadership is woven throughout.
