AI and academic integrity of undergraduate students in the United Arab Emirates

Tatiana Karabchuk and Aizhan Shomotova

Chapter 20 in Handbook on Corruption in Higher Education, 2025, pp 333-347 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter presents research focused on investigating the dishonest practices of university undergraduate students in the context of the recent massive spread of AI tools. Building upon the Original Academic Dishonesty Scale adapted from McCabe and Trevino's (1993), this study aimed to explore the patterns of academic dishonesty among undergraduate female students in one of the biggest public universities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The scale encompasses 12 forms of self-reported academic dishonesty, ranging from cheating on tests to plagiarizing from online sources. Respondents report their experiences in traditional academic dishonesty and e-dishonesty, including the usage of ChatGPT to complete their tasks and exams. This study seeks to enhance understanding of the reasons for e-dishonesty and its prevalence among undergraduate students. The findings serve as the ground to define institutional policies and strategies to promote academic integrity and strong ethics to mitigate both traditional and e-dishonesty practices among undergraduate students.
