Quilombola communities and degrowth: an architectural contribution

Chapter Chapter 9 in Dialogues for Degrowth, 2025, pp 117-129 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter intends to contribute to the debate on degrowth and post development through architecture. This approach arose from a question: if degrowth is a concept associated with the Global North, how do we discuss it from the perspective of the Global South? The answer could be connected to the resistance of traditional communities in countries like Brazil. These communities present economic, social, and environmental solutions with techniques, constructive materials, aesthetics, and symbolism that are in harmony with the discussions about the different ways of living. These are expressions of the hardships for socio-ecological justice and equity. The emphasis is unveiling alternative development routes that resist the destructive capitalism threatening the relationship between the territory and people in resistance. These territories are considered places of prosperity and well-being for these communities, especially the Quilombo Mesquita.
