Chapter Chapter 14 in Dialogues for Degrowth, 2025, pp 183-194 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Over the years, political polarisation, social fragmentation, and economic disparities have contributed to the decline in societal values, like solidarity and autonomy. This erosion manifests in various forms, from the racist rhetoric and anti-immigrant sentiments to the neglect of basic human rights and the prioritisation of profit over people. This chapter uses degrowth and post-development ideals to dismantle migration narratives that stem from historical and ongoing structural inequalities and power imbalances that accentuate the North-South divide. The text seeks to encourage readers to rethink their perspectives on migration and envision future societies of solidarity in which the right to stay and the right to leave are fundamental human rights. In doing so, this contribution also seeks to spark broader dialogues and facilitate opportunities for scholars, policymakers, activists, and practitioners to illuminate degrowth pathways toward restoring well-being and human dignity for everyone, as long “promised” by the ideology of development.
