Tokenizing the air: monetizing the invisible with blockchain

Chapter 13 in Research Handbook on FinTech, 2026, pp 234-241 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
As I reflect on the challenges of sustainability, I’m struck by the untapped potential of environmental data. In this chapter, I explore how blockchain technology can help us transform these invisible elements into tangible, tradable assets. We can tokenize environmental data that is captured by IoT devices, turning the data into a digital asset that can be traded or integrated into decentralized finance (DeFi) systems. I believe this approach not only gives value to the “invisible” but also incentivizes better data collection, democratizes access to green finance, and aligns economic goals with environmental priorities. By tokenizing the air we breathe, we can unlock new opportunities to accelerate climate action and build a more sustainable, equitable future.
