Chapter 16 in Research Handbook on FinTech, 2026, pp 292-305 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Digital currencies represent an alternative medium of exchange adapted to technology, a new era in humanity's revolution that seeks to usher in more developed lives and facilitate all processes. We explore the topic of digital currencies and the involvement of central banks. We also explore their dimensions. The chapter will begin by revealing the general meaning of CBDCs and the importance of understanding currencies, banks, and technology. These three pillars will be essential to understanding the essence of the chapter. We live in a dynamic and constantly evolving world, so it is important to understand the alternatives that will impact the economy and the financial system. This, in turn, will affect humanity's shift from physical currency to digital currency and digital media. It's clear that people's behavior changes as a result of disruptive events originating in the markets. New risks will exist, but it will be fascinating to address them.
