Central bank digital currencies and their future role

Chapter 17 in Research Handbook on FinTech, 2026, pp 306-317 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter will present and discuss the trends connected to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), especially the impact that the implementation of these tools will have on financial services institutions, global trade and economic activity, and how these financial instruments will alter financial transactions. As cryptoassets and other forms of tokenized assets have continued to spread and proliferate in the global economy, the emphasis has tended to be on decentralized (such as bitcoin) or semi-centralized (such as stablecoins), but the development of CBDCs has continued virtually unabated. With well over 100 nations working on these instruments to some extent, the fact remains that these assets are going to play a pivotal role in the global economy. As this development continues, there should be substantive conversations related to the economic, technical, and privacy implications of these cryptoassets. Presented in a manner suitable for both a practitioner and academic audience, this chapter will include references and additional resources for those interested in learning more.
