Digital entrepreneurship: venture capital investor strategies in the African context

Raymond Onuoha

Chapter 21 in Research Handbook on FinTech, 2026, pp 376-393 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter theorizes the impact of international venture capitalist strategic practices in shaping entrepreneurial actions and outcomes within resource-constrained digital contexts. Specifically, in the African context, it unravels the critical drivers of international financial flows from venture capital funders into the fledgling entrepreneurial digital ecosystems and their influence on the sustainability or failure of digital startups within the region. The outcome of this theoretical interrogation was the development of a conceptual model that links international venture funding strategies to digital startups’ resilience in the African context, based on three fundamental theories – social capital theory, social network theory, and institutional theory. The above conceptual analysis contributes analytical depth to the aggregated influence of social capital and networks within the institutional system on the investment decisions of international venture capitalists, and their impact on the realization of both VC objectives and entrepreneurial outcomes as a consequence of VC investments in the African digital ecosystem.
