Introduction to Handbook for Qualitative Research in Emerging Markets: how is qualitative research different in emerging markets?

Chapter 1 in Handbook for Qualitative Research in Emerging Markets, 2025, pp 1-11 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Doing qualitative research in emerging markets poses challenges to scholars that are rarely acknowledged. Participants do not always have pre-existing ideas about what constitutes research, and often expect researchers to develop meaningful relationships with them. Conventional ethics practices may not work - participants will often sign consent forms only once there is a relationship, and not at the start of a project. It can be very time-consuming to do research, both because the infrastructure in emerging markets is less developed, and because the management literature on emerging markets is sparse. Indeed, it seems quite hard to publish papers on conventional business and management literature topics, with research on social enterprises more common. This book uses the first-person narratives of a wide range of scholars to capture the complexity of doing research in emerging markets, and to offer guidance to scholars seeking to better understand this important context.
