Jin Chen, Nan Wang and Zitong Yang

Chapter 2 in Handbook on Post-Schumpeterian Innovations, 2025, pp 17-43 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In the post-Schumpeterian era, the subject of innovation has diversified from a single concept, and the scope of innovation has opened up beyond monopoly. User innovation breaks the traditional producer-led fixed innovation paradigm, transcends enterprise boundaries, unites users and producers into an organic whole, and explains the possibility of innovation from a new perspective. User innovation accelerates the development and progress of society, existing in all aspects of the economic environment and bursting with vitality in the new era. In this chapter, we explore the results of user innovation in the post-Schumpeterian era, starting from the processes of innovation generation, idea evaluation, and innovation diffusion. We focus on the prominent role of user innovation (the lead user) and the field of innovation (the household sector), concluding with several new developments in user innovation in the digital era and a new paradigm of collaborative innovation between users and manufacturers.
