Synergizing science and experience: systematic literature review on strategic integration of STI and DUI modes for enhanced innovation outcomes

Marta Najda-Janoszka

Chapter 8 in Handbook on Post-Schumpeterian Innovations, 2025, pp 129-148 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This study systematically reviews the integration of Science and Technology-based Innovation (STI) and Doing, Using, Interacting (DUI) modes to enhance innovation outcomes. Drawing from extensive literature, it examines how these distinct approaches – STI focusing on formal knowledge creation and technological advancements, and DUI rooted in tacit knowledge and experiential learning – interact dynamically within organizations. Empirical evidence suggests that the strategic integration of STI and DUI modes significantly boosts organizational innovativeness by combining formal scientific insights with practical experiences, thus yielding technologically advanced and market-responsive innovations. However, the interaction effects are complex and context-dependent, with some studies highlighting synergies while others caution about potential challenges and negative impacts. The review identifies that organizational capabilities, industry characteristics, and broader institutional environments play crucial roles in determining the effectiveness of integrating these innovation modes. It underscores the necessity for nuanced approaches to manage these combinations, with implications extending beyond organizations to influence regional and national innovation systems. The study aims to reconcile conflicting evidence and provide comprehensive insights to inform future research and policy formulations, advocating for dynamic and context-sensitive strategies to foster a more inclusive and effective innovation ecosystem.
