Economic development and ocean sustainability: the Northeast Asian perspective

In Joo Yoon

Chapter 13 in Handbook on Economic Growth and the Environment, 2026, pp 312-327 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the relationship between economic development and ocean sustainability in Northeast Asia by analyzing key United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14) indicators alongside economic measures such as GDP and fisheries production. Using data from the Sustainable Development Report 2024 (2024), it employs a panel dataset with broad coverage and minimal missing values. The analysis finds that wealthier countries invest more in marine conservation, as shown by positive correlations between GDP, marine protected areas, and water quality. However, higher GDP levels are also associated with overfishing and intensified fishing activities, indicating that economic growth does not guarantee sustainable fisheries management. Cross-country and income-group comparisons reveal significant disparities in marine conservation outcomes. These findings underscore the need for stronger regulatory frameworks, enhanced regional cooperation, and targeted policies to align economic development with long-term ocean sustainability.
