Émile Durkheim as university administrator
Marcel Fournier
Chapter 2 in The Elgar Companion to Émile Durkheim, 2026, pp 15-39 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines Durkheim's work as a university administrator at the University of Paris from 1910 until the end of his life in 1917. It documents the administrative details that Durkheim dealt with in this time period as well as various other activities he undertook as a member of the Council of the University of Paris. Such activities included the recruitment of especially American students to the University of Paris during World War I as well as propaganda efforts on the part of the university, in coordination with the French government, to promote French culture abroad. The chapter also details the end of Durkheim's life, including the impact the death of his son André in 1916 had on his declining health. In this way, the chapter provides context for some of Durkheim's final publications, and also sheds light more broadly on the history of France and of the University of Paris during World War I.
