Understanding wealth: the foundations of gender dynamics in personal finance
Christina Gossayn
Chapter 10 in Research Handbook on Personal Finance, 2026, pp 166-183 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
For centuries, money has reinforced exclusion by denying financial independence to women, eliminating non-binary individuals from financial systems, and restricting men to rigid gender roles as sole providers. This chapter examines how gender and finance are shaped by entrenched social norms, cognitive biases, and systemic inequalities. Through six personas, the chapter highlights diverse financial experiences shaped by cultural conditioning, structural barriers, and identity intersections.
