Retirement savings and income planning

Tao Guo

Chapter 13 in Research Handbook on Personal Finance, 2026, pp 225-244 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter discusses the body of research on retirement savings and income planning. It examines both the theory and the practice, starting with the life cycle hypothesis, which captures saving and spending patterns, and then tackles some major risks like longevity, inflation, healthcare expenditure, and sequence of return risks that threaten the financial well-being of retirees. The chapter discusses the regulatory rules around tax-sheltered accounts and the benefit of selecting and optimizing the use of these accounts for retirement savings and income planning. The chapter further explains the details of retirement income strategies, the role of annuities, and the major analytical approaches in the evaluation and optimization of retirement decisions and retirement income strategies.
