Tracey L. Adams
Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on the Sociology of the Professions, 2025, pp 1-19 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter presents an introduction to the study of the sociology of professions, defining key terms and reviewing major theoretical perspectives in the field. It also considers trends impacting professions and professional workers, exploring whether these are combining to form a polycrisis. Key trends include the politicization of expertise, attacks on professions, rising mistrust, changing working conditions, uneven access to professional services and careers, technological changes, financialization, globalization and transnationalism. An overview of the chapters included in the Handbook is also provided. The chapter ends with a concluding section highlighting some key areas for future research in the field.
