Gendered professional ecology and political polarization in the legal profession in Brazil

Maria da Gloria Bonelli

Chapter 23 in Research Handbook on the Sociology of the Professions, 2025, pp 354-367 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This text focuses on the presence of women lawyers in conflicts around the reconfiguration of professional forces in the legal world in Brazil. Rather than deploying an explanation that posits diversifying group composition as the main factor underlying these disputes, we see the tension between rules and power in Brazilian law practice as a response to the profession's specificities and its relationship to political and ideological polarization. Liu (2021) addresses this tension, perceiving it as inherent to lawyers in the professional ecology. Analysis of the case in point is supported by this conception, giving visibility to the gendering that is a part of it. Fieldwork relied on qualitative methods, with semi-structured interviews conducted with professional women; our other sources were newspapers and online media, the websites of professional associations, professionals’ social networks and a specialized bibliography.
