Chapter 7 in Research Handbook on the Sociology of the Professions, 2025, pp 91-104 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The work of professionals is embedded in complex political, social, cultural and economic contexts. In this chapter, we discuss conditions of work and employment in the public sector, specifically the teaching profession within the education sector, where a number of governance and reform agendas, characterised by choice, privatisation, marketisation and competition, have been introduced in recent decades. In synthesising empirical insights from a decade-long research programme examining teachers’ work and employment conditions in Sweden and Australia, we highlight the phenomena of blanketing, differentiation and heterogeneity in experiences and outcomes for teacher-professionals across both sites. Departing from these findings, we argue that using a geographically informed frame of reference is vital for advancing the field of the sociology of professions and understanding contemporary professional work.
