Abstract: This chapter explores the interplay of race and gender within the complex landscape of refugee experiences through the lens of critical social work. Examining intersectionality theory and critical social work scholarship, the chapter highlights how social work can navigate the challenging terrain when working in this internationally turbulent area of practice. Grounded in a commitment to social justice and human rights, the chapter examines how power structures, systematic inequalities, and cultural dynamics intersect to shape the experiences of racialised and gendered minorities within displaced communities. It unpacks the intersecting forms of discrimination, violence, and exclusion that permeate refugee contexts, shedding light on the ways in which race and gender intersect to produce vulnerabilities and barriers to well-being. This chapter advocates for a more inclusive and intersectional approach to social work intervention and advocacy in refugee settings, aiming to foster transformative practices and social change.
