Transitional Safeguarding and intersectionality

Abstract: This chapter explores how any young person at risk of or experiencing harms or adversity is likely to experience a gap in support at the point when they are deemed to be ‘adults’. The challenge for practitioners when supporting young people to be safe, feel safe, and keep themselves safe is to ensure that the safeguarding support is effective in achieving resolution, safety, and wellbeing for that young person as they get older. Paying attention to issues of equity, equality, diversity and inclusion is one of the key principles of Transitional Safeguarding; this chapter builds on this to consider how intersectionality can promote more effective safeguarding for young people. As with the concept of Transitional Safeguarding, this chapter is boundary spanning; although it is located in the part of the book about adults, it also relates to and informs safeguarding practices in other parts of this book.
