Chapter 3 in Creating the Future of Work, 2025, pp 38-64 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 3 explores the imaginary of work as a collaboration between humans and machines. These are seductive imaginaries, closely tied to the development of smart robots and AI, and building on the idea of work as physically or emotionally draining for humans, and humans being biased, hence not performing work in the best way possible. In the chapter, we show how these imaginaries, however, construct an unevenness in the collaboration between humans and machines – in the machines’ favor – and how human agency over their work can begin to diminish. The chapter also questions the idea that humans are homogenous in desiring certain types of work and avoiding others.
