Chapter 16 in Research Handbook on Animal Law and Animal Rights, 2025, pp 309-325 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The Austrian Animal Protection Act prioritizes the well-being of all animals and emphasizes human responsibility for their welfare. Under the Act, it is forbidden to cause undue pain, suffering, or harm to an animal or subject it to severe distress. The Act's flexibility, achieved through ordinances, adapts to evolving scientific insights and societal changes. Additionally, the Act institutes independent animal protection ombudspersons, ensuring representation, compliance, and active involvement in legislative processes. This chapter focuses on the work of the animal protection ombudsperson in Austria.
