On being systemic

Thomas S. Lyons ()

Chapter 2 in Rethinking Community Economic Development, 2025, pp 10-27 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the importance of taking a systemic approach to community economic development, because the ultimate goal is the transformation of our communities and the lives of the residents, and only systemic approaches yield transformation. The chapter discusses what it means to be systemic and how systems create crucial synergies required for change. It further examines the application of systems thinking directly to community economic development, featuring the concept of ecosystems. It concludes with a preliminary view of what an ecosystem focused on community economic development could look like.
