The role of social capital building
Thomas S. Lyons ()
Chapter 4 in Rethinking Community Economic Development, 2025, pp 42-55 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The creation of a transformational system – a community economic development ecosystem – requires the building of social capital. This chapter defines social capital, in general, and two important types, in particular: bonding and bridging. It explores not only how social capital is built but how it is maintained as well. It explores the art and craft of the practical application of social capital building, known as ‘networking,’ and uses the work of the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks as a detailed example. It concludes with an examination of the role of social capital building in the development of human ecosystems.
