The inclusion of challenges associated with the SDGs agenda in the training of creative profiles

Paula Fernández Gago and Rodrigo Martínez Rodríguez

Chapter 17 in The Elgar Companion to Social Innovation and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2026, pp 354-374 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Challenge-Based Learning is a common methodology in the educational development of industrial design engineering student profiles, which combine technical and creative skills. Higher education institutions have recognized that this student-centered practice can facilitate the integration of vertical competencies (core subjects of study) with horizontal competencies (related to soft skills). Including external agents in classrooms fosters University-Industry collaboration, embodying the Challenge-Based Learning model. This chapter highlights the use of active methodologies in searching for solutions to address challenges related to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. Through best practice cases, we aim to demonstrate successful solutions to social challenges using social innovation ideas. This includes identifying how topics covered in class can help solve challenges, as well as encouraging young professionals to propose concrete solutions through idea calls and competitions. These cases highlight the inherent connection between a new generation of professionals and their ability to respond to today's social challenges.
