Chapter 21 in The Elgar Companion to Social Innovation and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2026, pp 440-456 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In light of pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges we face today as a global community, an essential part of the learning required to prepare individuals to drive positive change is to encourage them to think and act as autonomous agents of change. Toward this end, facilitating transformative learning is crucial in social innovation pedagogy to enable students to critically reflect on their assumptions and worldviews as they explore challenges and opportunities surrounding social change and Sustainable Development Goals. This chapter proposes utilizing inspirational videos for transformative learning in social innovation education. It proposes how videos may spark transformative learning, outlining implications of leveraging videos in social innovation teaching and learning. The chapter offers practical recommendations for the effective utilization of videos and ends by proposing research avenues and future opportunities to further advance the use of inspirational videos for transformative learning in social innovation education.
