Ending hunger requires local food: a case study of the Hunger Task Force Farm

Melissa G. Bublitz and Jonathan Hansen

Chapter 6 in The Elgar Companion to Social Innovation and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2026, pp 120-135 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Hunger is a global problem. UN SDG Goal 2: Zero Hunger seeks to “create a world free of hunger by 2030” (UN, 2024). While the problem exists globally, solutions must be localized to community conditions. Diverse communities should have access to food with dignity. In this chapter, we present a case study that profiles the innovative solutions of Milwaukee's Hunger Task Force (HTF). As a strategic response to the lack of fresh food within the emergency food network, the HTF operates a 208-acre urban farm. Operating under an innovative public-private partnership model, The Farm produces over 500,000 pounds of fresh, culturally appropriate fruits and vegetables annually. The HTF combines this with innovative nutrition education programs to help children learn about where their food comes from and basic cooking skills. National funding for food access is critical, but helping local organizations innovate solutions offers our best chance to end hunger.
