Chapter 7 in The Elgar Companion to Social Innovation and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2026, pp 136-155 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #16 aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. In a post-conflict setting, the reintegration of ex-combatants into mainstream society is essential to achieving a lasting resolution to conflict. This chapter examines how social innovations can provide solutions in post-conflict contexts by analyzing the case of the “Minimarket 2X3” micro-franchises in Colombia. Developed through cross-sector collaboration among public, private, and social organizations, these micro-franchises aimed to establish sustainable businesses for war victims and former combatants. The findings illustrate how this market-based peacebuilding initiative was designed, implemented, and concluded between 2010 and 2020. The chapter discusses how these insights contribute to the existing literature on social innovations for peacebuilding and cross-sector collaboration for social innovation. Finally, the chapter outlines the study's limitations and suggests avenues for future research on social innovation in peace-building contexts.
