Thriving through technology: social innovations in mental health

Jane Machin and Aušra Rūtelionė

Chapter 9 in The Elgar Companion to Social Innovation and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2026, pp 181-202 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Mental health is a global concern integral to sustainable economic growth (Dybdahl & Lien, 2018; Izutsu et al., 2015). More than the mere absence of mental illness, complete mental health – or thriving – also requires the presence of mental wellness (Keyes, 2002). In this chapter we first briefly review the complex relationship between mental health and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscoring the imperative for social innovation in this space. Drawing on the biopsychosocial model of mental health, we then outline recent technological innovations that seek to either prevent or treat mental illness and/or maintain or improve mental wellness. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges that accompany digital solutions in mental health to help social entrepreneurs ensure technology benefits consumers’ mental health while minimizing harm.
