Heuristics: socialism - from science to Utopia
.
Chapter 3 in Rethinking Socialism, 2024, pp 27-37 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Current debates on socialism are Chapter 3’s starting point. These range from the ideas of feminists such as Maggie Abraham, Tithi Bhattacharya and Nancy Fraser to eco-socialist voices from the global South such as Michelle Williams and Vishwas Satgar, to state theorists such as Bob Jessop and sociological Marxists such as Michael Burawoy and Erik Olin Wright. The economist Thomas Piketty and the digitalisation critic Evgeny Morozov have added to the debate. Each of these authors share the book’s concern. Socialism in the 21st century is above all a search for ways out of an economic-ecological pincer crisis that threatens the survival of human civilisation. This search can only succeed if socialism once again becomes a “real utopia”. Socialism is here presented as a real possibility, not some preordained goal of history. Socialist agency requires a multitude of strategies that can overcome the capitalist system only by working in combination.
